How do UV Curing Adhesives work? UV adhesives cure during exposure to ultra violet light. UV adhesives contain photoinitiators reactive to specific light wavelengths that act as catalysts to promote polymerisation reactions between monomers and oligamers in the material.  This polymerisation reaction typically takes place in seconds or less and thus UV curing is often referred to as ‘instant curing’. Why use UV Curing Adhesives? Curing is fast and products can be handled straight away – allowing more efficient use of jigs or continuous flow in an automated process. UV Curing is on demand (when UV light is activated) and thus there is no time pressure as there is with two part or air drying materials for difficult to position or alignment applications. Errors can be corrected / cleaned /reworked without loss of base material. UV adhesives do not dissolve, melt or weaken the surfaces of the two items to be joined. A strong chemical bond is formed between the two substrates providing a high strength alternative to other curing methods. UV materials are solvent free and much less energy is required to cure them than heat cure materials. UV curing adhesives are very stable and chemically resistant. As no diluent is dried off, volume of material cured, stays approximately the same giving an aesthetically pleasing finish and reducing concerns related to material shrinkage. What should be considered in specification of UV equipment and materials? With UV curing adhesives, there are specific formulations for different applications which may vary according to strength, shrinkage, surface finish, clarity and adhesion to different materials and ability to cure between surfaces. 
Different materials contain different photoinitiators to achieve different results and these have different absorption characteristics in respect of UV light, both in terms of wavelength and intensity. A wide variety of sources are available from low to high pressure mercury based and doped bulbs to LEDs. Different applications need UV to be applied in different ways, perhaps in a continuous process such as an automated machine or a UV conveyor line or in a static jig or workstation. In all cases the optics required to deliver the UV have to be considered (taking into account the absorption of shorter wavelengths by some ‘reflective’ materials etc.) in conjunction with product handling. Jenton can help develop and optimise your process taking the above considerations into account, supplying your company with both a suitable uv adhesive and curing mechanism.  We have a test laboratory at our premises in Whitchurch Hampshire and potential customers are welcome to trial both our adhesives and curing equipment.  We also have surface treating and environmental test chamber facilities.

Cure time is dependent on several parameters and can be adjusted by changing the light intensity or distance of the light from the assembly. The wide range of viscosities available allows for both manual and automated dispensing of the adhesives
